In every space where I work, whether I am facilitating classroom learning, leading professional development for educators, or guiding dancers through the creative process before choreography begins, one truth remains constant: people connect through story.

That is why Story Exchange has become such a meaningful part of my work.

In 2023, I completed facilitator training and earned certification through Narrative 4 at Destination Arts Integration. Narrative 4 is an organization devoted to building connection and inspiring action through storytelling. Their mission resonates deeply with my own work as a teaching artist, consultant, and choreographer because meaningful learning begins with human connection.

Narrative 4 believes that when people learn to listen deeply, reflect with care, and respond with compassion, communities become stronger. I have seen this firsthand.

At the heart of Narrative 4’s work is the Story Exchange.

A Story Exchange is a guided experience where participants share personal stories, listen with intention, and then retell one another’s stories in the first person. This simple but powerful practice helps people move beyond assumptions and toward genuine understanding.

The process unfolds in four stages:

Prepare

Participants get grounded, establish shared guidelines, and choose a story they feel ready to share. This stage creates emotional safety and builds trust within the group.

Share

Partners exchange personal stories while practicing active listening. The goal is not to respond, fix, or advise. The goal is to truly listen.

Retell

Each participant retells their partner’s story in the first person, honoring what they heard and stepping into another person’s perspective.

Reflect

The group comes back together to discuss what they learned and how the experience might shape future interactions and actions.

What makes Story Exchange so powerful is its ability to shift perspective.

In classrooms, I use Story Exchange to help students build empathy, emotional literacy, and stronger peer relationships. Students begin to see one another as whole people, not just classmates sharing a room.

With educators, Story Exchange creates opportunities for deeper reflection, stronger collaboration, and renewed awareness of the human experiences that shape teaching and learning. Professional development becomes more than acquiring strategies. It becomes community building.

With dancers and performers, Story Exchange opens the creative process. Before choreography begins, storytelling invites vulnerability, authenticity, and emotional depth. Movement becomes more than steps or counts. It becomes an embodied story.

This is especially meaningful within my own creative framework because I believe movement is one of the most powerful ways we translate human experience into expression. When the story comes first, choreography gains emotional truth.

Story Exchange reminds us that listening is an act of leadership.

When we make space for story, we make space for belonging. When we listen deeply, we create the conditions for trust. And when trust is present, meaningful growth becomes possible.

I am grateful to be part of the Narrative 4 community and continually inspired by the trainings, resources, and people within this organization.

If your school, organization, arts program, or team is interested in hosting a Story Exchange workshop, I would love to help facilitate that experience.

Together, we can create spaces where stories build connection,
deepen understanding, and inspire action.
